1942 WW II U. S. Army Air Force Bomber B5 Drift Meter Eastman Kodak
1942 WW II U. Army Air Force Bomber Type B-5 Drift Meter. Made by Eastman Kodak, Rochester, NY. Good overall condition with all major mechanical parts present except for the two large rubber fittings which have rotted away. There are also two stripped screws missing from the tube that holds the mirror, and there is a small crack in the casting. The circular scale rotates as it should. The glass (which is often broken or missing on B-5s) has been replaced with slightly thicker satin glass. The optics are showing age but are working correctly, and the needle is in good condition and moves properly. The brass nameplate and seconds/knots/MPH/height dial are in good condition, but tarnished. These could be cleaned up but I left them as I found them. The B-5 Drift Meter was used to improve the accuracy of bombing raids. The operator of the drift meter would observe through the eyepiece the drift of the bomb as it dropped, and trace the drift with a pen or crayon on the circular satin glass scale on the right side of the meter. This information would be used to calculate drift so that each successive bomb was more accurate. Please get in touch with any questions.
