Named World War II US Army Air Force Combat Air Crewman Radio Operator Uniform
Nice example of the World War II US M-1939 Winter Service Coat that was worn by a Combat Air Crewman in the U. There is no spec label or size markings in the usual locations. The collars are adorned with a mismatched set of US and Army Air Forces collar brass – although they appear to be original to the uniform. The left breast features a beautiful set of clutch back Sterling Silver Air Crew wings that are pinned on an ultramarine rectangular backing – which is hand-sewn to the uniform. Wings with this ultramarine backing were worn by Air Crewmen who were serving with a unit participating in combat operations, and are not often found. The left shoulder is adorned with a felt Army Air Forces HQ shoulder sleeve insignia, which is hand-sewn to the uniform with blue silk thread. The right cuff is adorned with a Radio Operator Specialist Triangle. The uniform is partially lined, with various laundry numbers stamped inside – making research possible if one so wished. The uniform remains in good condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. The exterior is generally fine, except for an area of moth damage on the right sleeve. All buttons are present.
